Walter Leblanc’s Research Box (1957-63) is part of the collection of Mu.ZEE in Ostend. Research Box brings together multiple strands of the artist’s inquiry into the nature of painting, housing miniatures of his iconic torsions, twisted strings, and gouache works within a single frame. As such, it resembles Marcel Duchamp’s La Boîte-en-valise works, mixed media assemblages consisting of a group of reproductions of Duchamp’s works inside a box that was, in some cases, accompanied by a leather valise or suitcase.
