archive
The archive lies at the heart of many of the Foundation’s current activities. It is thanks to Nicole Leblanc’s meticulous stewardship that Walter Leblanc’s legacy has been preserved in the form of countless documents, from correspondence with artists and galleries, to printed exhibition material, to original manuscripts of Leblanc’s texts and notebooks. This archive offers multiple paths into Leblanc’s oeuvre and life, which are explored by artists and writers collaborating with the Foundation today.
In October 2024, the Foundation was awarded a grant from the Flemish government to further research and develop our archives, as part of a pilot project for artists’ legacies. During one year, and with the help of our interns, we digitised and described over 1,000 documents, conducted interviews with contemporaries of Walter Leblanc, and organised a symposium on artist legacies. We would like to thank our partners: Centrum Kunstarchieven Vlaanderen and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp for collaborating with us. We continue to digitise and add to our archival database, and develop our archive as a catalyst for initiating new discourses on Leblanc’s work, its historical significance and contemporary relevance.
The archive is accessible to scholars, curators and students by appointment. Contact archive@walterleblanc.org for more information.
